Description
The original Nike Air Jordan 1 was introduced in 1984 as Michael Jordan’s first signature basketball shoe, arriving just as he entered the NBA with the Chicago Bulls. Designed by Peter Moore, the shoe broke sharply from the mostly white basketball sneakers that dominated the league at the time. Its high-top shape, bold color blocking, Nike Swoosh and “wings” logo gave it a look that matched Jordan’s style of play and growing star power.
Black and red in color, Nike leaned heavily into the idea that the Jordan 1 violated NBA uniform rules, building a legendary marketing campaign around the notion that Jordan was fined every time he wore them. Whether the full story was as simple as the ads suggested or not, the controversy helped make the shoe feel edgy, youthful and different.
The Air Jordan 1 was not just a piece of athletic equipment; it also became a symbol widely recognized in popular culture. It helped turn sneakers into objects of fashion, identity and collecting.
