Description
Francis I, king of France from 1515 to 1547, reigned during a pivotal era in world history. A charismatic leader, he embodied the Renaissance spirit, freely showing support of artists like Leonardo da Vinci and transforming the French court into a cultural hub. He also continued France's involvement in the Italian Wars, seeking to expand French influence in the region. Though his military campaigns were ultimately unsuccessful, they solidified the rivalry between France and the powerful Holy Roman Empire.
Francis I's legacy is multifaceted. He's remembered as a champion of the arts, forever linked to the flourishing of the French Renaissance. To some, he was known as le Père et Restaurateur des Lettres (the Father and Restorer of Letters) while others referred to him as François au Grand Nez (Francis of the Large Nose).
Jean Clouet's "Portrait of Francis I" is a masterpiece capturing the French king during his reign. The painting embodies the elegance of the Renaissance era.

Clouet forgoes traditional royal symbols like a crown and, instead, subtly incorporates subtle themes of royalty into the background. Francis I’s narrowed gaze and confident posture project an aura of regality and shrewdness, leaving a lasting impression of the monarch.
The “oil on oak” Portrait of Francis I measures approximately 37.7” x 29.1” and is housed at the Louvre in Paris, France.
