Description
This photo of Elvis was taken from his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Though Elvis Presley had already garnered national attention with hit songs and appearances on other shows, his debut on The Ed Sullivan Show on September 9, 1956, is considered a pivotal moment in music history.
Sullivan, the host of the then-dominant variety program, had initially resisted booking Elvis due to the singer's controversial stage presence. However, after pressure from ratings and a car accident that left him unable to host, Sullivan brought Elvis on for a record-breaking three-show contract.
Actor Charles Laughton had taken on hosting duties for the injured Ed Sullivan on September 9, 1956. With millions tuning in, Elvis performed Love Me Tender, Don’t Be Cruel, Hound Dog and a cover of Little Richard’s Ready Teddy.
