Description

This poster is in promotion of the Band Flesh For Lulu and “Baby Hurricane” – the first single from their album Big Fun City. Its dimensions are estimated to be approximately 42.5” x 10.5”.

Finding & Recreating This Item

While a majority of the poster is visible during the scene when Ferris plays the clarinet, only a portion of the text is visible – "BABY HURRICANE" in the bottom left corner with “FLESH FOR LULU” spanning the width of the full poster. Beyond that, very little can be read with any certainty – but there is definitely more on this poster including the small white text over the word "BABY", the even-smaller black text across the bottom of the poster, and a white letter "B" poking out from the right side of the poster.

While this is where the efforts with this poster ended with the “full” recreation of Ferris Bueller’s bedroom back in 2016, I wanted to leave no corner cut and no stone unturned.

Going back to the film, I noticed when Jeannie comes home to discover that Ferris is truly ditching school, she slams his bedroom door and this poster partially falls from the wall in the upper left of the screen. This reveals the word "CITY" in white text matching "BABY HURRICANE" and the lone letter "B" previously mentioned.

Anybody with any knowledge of Flesh For Lulu or with access to the internet easily connects these dots – Baby Hurricane is the first single off the Flesh For Lulu album Big Fun City

Knowing this information and with a closer look at the poster as Ferris plays the clarinet, the small white text above "BABY HURRICANE" reads "NEW SINGLE". This makes it a reasonable assumption that the text over the word "CITY" reads "NEW ALBUM".

But there was still the matter of the black text across the bottom of the poster. So back to the film we go.

A sharp eye might notice that when Mrs. Bueller comes home to check on Ferris and she opens the bedroom door for the second time, some of the mechanics of Ferris’s pulley system are shown which includes a quick glimpse at a string running through an eye-bolt at the top of a door or window frame.

During these few seconds, I recognized the yellow and black border of the poster to the left of the screen as the Rave-Ups poster over Ferris's bed. This means that the pink poster seen above the eye bolt is the Flesh For Lulu poster we’re talking about here.

The word in black text at the bottom left of the poster appears to end in "BIRMINGHAM." Switching over to the full-screen VHS release, this scene reveals a bit more of the black text. The first line starts with "LIVE OCT 20 - LON[DON]" and the bottom line starts with "4 - BIRMINGHAM". These are clearly tour dates.

Big Fun City was released in November of 1985 and a search for 1985 Flesh for Lulu tour dates turned up a comprehensive list of dates and venues. Using this information and returning to the blurry black text seen on the poster in the clarinet scene, it is easy to confirm that these tour dates are listed across the bottom of the poster.

Going back to the same Flesh for Lulu website where the tour dates were found, an advertisement for the release of Baby Hurricane showed the band's name in the same font as the poster.

By isolating the "Flesh for Lulu" text in both the advertisement and the clarinet scene and overlaying the image from the movie on top of the ad, manipulations to the movie image allowed for determining proper width and height proportions of the poster.

With the overlaid movie image in proper proportion, the black shapes behind the band's name could be added completing the full content of the poster.
