Seen in FBDO
The Better Homes & Gardens Salad Book is initially seen in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off during the scene where Ferris and Cameron “make a phony phone call to Edward Rooney.” The screenshot below comes at approximately 00:25:08 in the film as Cameron attempts to leave Ferris’s kitchen. The book is seen among several others on the counter to the left of the refrigerator.

A closer view of the Salad Book can be found at 00:52:16 after Mr. Rooney rings the doorbell outside the Bueller house. When Mr. Rooney attempts to use the home’s intercom system to talk to Ferris, we catch a glimpse of the kitchen intercom speaker with the Salad Book clearly visible on the left side of the screen.

Description
Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks have been a staple in American kitchens for over a century. Throughout the 20th century, these cookbooks evolved to reflect changing tastes, dietary trends, and culinary techniques. Early editions focused on traditional home cooking while later titles expanded to include international cuisine and recipes for special occasions.
The Better Homes & Gardens Salad Book was first published in 1958 by the Meredith Publishing Company and boasts a wide variety of “plain and fancy salad [recipes] for every occasion.” While some recipes detail more traditional dishes like the “greens with tomato topper” and the “supper salad wheel,” others are a bit more questionable such as the “banana ham rolls” and the “tangy tuna mousse squares.”

Notes
While this book is easily recognized by its title and color pattern, the words “Better Homes & Gardens” are covered with black tape on the book’s spine in the movie. This is almost certainly to avoid any licensing and copyright issues.
