Description

The tiki mug seen in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of several that were available at the unforgettable Stockton, California tiki bar, The Islander. First opening its doors in 1961, The Islander offered a unique visit to a tropical paradise with its thatched roof, palm trees, and exotic decor – all intended to look like a shipwreck on the beach.

The Islander quickly became a local hotspot, drawing in crowds with its Polynesian-inspired atmosphere, live music, and delicious tropical cocktails. The bar's popularity was fueled by its iconic tiki mugs, which were highly sought after by collectors. Most of these mugs were manufactured by the Otagiri Mercantile Company – headquartered in San Francisco with production taking place in Japan. The mug used in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off measures approximately 8” tall and 3.5” wide at its base.

Over the years, The Islander faced various challenges, including changes in ownership and the shifting tides of popular culture. Unfortunately, The Islander eventually closed its doors, leaving behind a whimsical legacy, countless memories … and collectible mugs like the one used by Ferris Bueller.

The Islander was located at 6623 Pacific Avenue in Stockton, California (38.010542, -121.320866). In the mid-1990s, after the business had been permanently closed, the unique building was moved to 10464 North Highway 99 in Stockton and operated as the Pollardville Chicken Kitchen. Ultimately, the building was abandoned and eventually demolished.
