Seen in FBDO
As Ferris Bueller’s Day Off starts to wind down, we find Jeanie sitting in the Shermer police station with Garth Volbeck (01:17:15). The usual widescreen version of the film cuts the bottom of the shot off just below their knees.

The same scene viewed in full-screen, however, reveals the reading options provided by the Shermer police to those in their station’s waiting area. The top magazine on the stack is this issue of Sports Illustrated.

Description
This particular issue is the January 8, 1979 publication of Sports Illustrated which features the cover story “‘Bama Stops Penn State.” This issue covers multiple Bowl games which took place the previous week in college football including Alabama’s 14-7 victory over Penn State in the Sugar Bowl.
Notes
It seems odd that a magazine from 1979 is still around in the mid-1980s for Shermer citizens to read at the police station. Did the Shermer Police let their subscription expire? Is someone on the Shermer Police staff an avid Alabama football fan?
Finding This Item
I started with a simple Google search by looking for a similar cover on any Sports Illustrated issues from the mid-1980s. Unfortunately, nothing turned up. Luckily, Sports Illustrated published a book in 2010 – Sports Illustrated: The Covers – which features a look at the covers from the full run of SI covers up to that point. After realizing that this cover was definitely not from the mid-80s, I started working backwards through the book until I hit pay dirt in the 1979 chapter!
